Week 01: The Tanak in Broad Strokes

The TaNaK is an acronym for:
Torah (first 5 books Instruction/Law)
Nevi'im Prophets
--former prophets (historical books)
--latter prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and so on)
------major prophets (take up a whole scroll themselves)
------minor prophets (short books)

Ketuvim Writings

Based on the genre of the text, we will be able to better understand the text and what the author meant to convey. However, there is no "one" meaning. We must get to a place where we are able to see the array of meanings to various groups.

After reading, listening, and watching the various things available this week, my biggest question is this: when do we get to dive in?

  1. Thank you for the Storify "feed" (I don't know if that's the right word) from today. I was in the psychological evaluation part of my candidacy process during the Hangout today. I'm glad to have the conversation to read now!

    1. Of course! I was unable to attend it myself. I teach ballet on Thursday afternoons. I hope Professor Lester will host some of the hangouts at other times.

  2. I'm looking forward to when we jump into the Psalms next week. I was surprised that the Psalms are the first part of the Hebrew Bible that we'll be looking at in detail but perhaps it's because they're an easier part of the Bible to relate to from our contemporary world.

  3. I'm curious about the context and setting of all books especially Psalms, Daniel, and Hosea. Psalms has always been a favorite because it does relate to much in modern day living. It's a book of daily devotions all by itselg.

  4. vergilius2 and imgodsbeloved,
I love the Psalms as well. I went to the Holy Land over winter break, and seeing the location that inspired the 23rd Psalm was incredible and made the verses come to life. I am looking forward to learning more!
